The Befores

We (finally) closed on our house in Chattanooga on Thursday!  It seemed like the end of a process, but it was really the beginning of it: we have quite the list of projects. But that's okay! We wanted it this way and can't wait to make this house pretty again.

I snapped a few shots of the most desperate-looking rooms before our family helped us get everything into the house...

We have already started peeling the wallpaper in here, and we have a different light fixture to hang.  Those changes plus paint are all this room needs.

This is the formal living room to the right of the front door. Your eyes do not deceive you: the walls are pink. Needless to say, paint is in order.  But I love the french doors!

The view of the pink room from the den facing towards the front of the house.

The den is getting new paint, recessed lighting (shocking that the off-centered, dated ceiling fan light isn't staying, right?), and new hardware on the cabinets of the built-ins.

The den... again. That door goes to a screened-in porch.

Oh, boy.  The kitchen.  Doesn't everyone need red flowers on their tile?

For now, we're just changing out the hardware. The cabinets are all custom, solid wood, so they'll stay.  They will look better when surrounded by more updated finishes.  The floors will be changed someday.

This lighting fixture doesn't work, which is a shame because it's one of two decent-looking ones in the house.  I love the french doors out to the deck though.

I can hear angels singing when I look at this laundry room.  There's a sink plus plenty of storage.  The washer and dryer the previous owners left behind are pretty awesome, also.

The master bedroom has a nice bay window...

... and is connected to a little sitting room.

I'm sure the navy-and-mauve tile in the master bathroom is enviable... not. The size is nice, though.

Something about bathing in a 30-year-old jetted tub is unappealing.  We plan on re-tiling the floor in here and installing a large shower where the tub is currently.  We'll move the toilet into what is now the shower stall so that we don't have to move plumbing around.

This is the bathroom for the secondary bedrooms. This picture flatters the current wall color: it is sort of neon in real life.  I've already bought Benjamin Moore "Swiss Coffee" to paint in here.

There are some bedrooms and Grant's office near the bathroom, but only one needs paint (Gasp!), so I don't have any pictures of them as befores.

This is the basement den.  I don't want to know what's growing in the navy carpet...

... especially because it's also in the basement bathroom.

There are two more bedrooms down here, and eventually I want to make them pretty also.  My mission is to keep them from looking as though all the hand-me-downs ended up in the basement.

It's going to be a process:  it's not going to be pretty in a month or maybe even in a year, but that's okay.  We'll enjoy the time and remember that just as we want to see potential in this house and make it beautiful again, God looks at us in our nothingness an desires to restore us.

Happy restorations!
